2015 Honor and Design Awards Winners Announced

On Thursday, November 5th, more than 200 members of the architecture community gathered at Tampa Garden Club to witness the presenation of AIA Tampa Bay's Honor and Design Awards. Emmy-nominated reporter, News Channel 8's Stacie Schaible emceed the lively presentation, assisting chapter president Carlos Molnar to present 23 awards recognizing contributions to the profession, the community and design excellence. Honor awards were presented first and included the following:


President's Award - Jeff Speck, AICP, Speck and Associates
President's Award - David Dixon, AIA, Stantec

President's Award - Strategic Property Partners, LLC, accepted by Bob Abberger
Allied Award - John Eveland, PE, George F Young
Award of Excellence - City of Tampa Historic Preservation Department, Dennis Fernandez

Award of Excellence - Rachel Radawec, Tampa Downtown Partnership

The Artisan Award - The Urban Conga

Contractor's Award - The A.D. Morgan Corporation

Kelley Emerging Professional Award - Patrick Thorpe, AIA

Pullara Award - Larry Wilder, AIA, Wilder Architecture

Firm Award - Halflants + Pichette Studio for Modern Architecture
Medal of Honor - Robert M. MacLeod, AIA, USF School of Architecture & Community Design



The People's Choice award is juried by the community during Tampa Bay Design Week from all entries posted on Behance. This year's winner receiving more than 170 votes was Rashid Medical Complex by Gresham, Smith & Partners.

Design Awards were juried by Rob Rogers, FAIA with Rogers Partners, David Lewis, LTL Architects and Stephen Cassell, AIA. They selected 10 out of 56 total entries to be recognized. All of the entries may be viewed on Behance.


Awards of Merit recognize projects that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in architectural design. Merit Awards were presented to:

Risdon on 5th : Halflants + Pichette Studio for Modern Architecture

Honor Awards recognize projects that demonstrate the highest standards of design and innovation and a commitment to excellence in architectural design. Honor awards were presented to:

Mohammed Indimi International Business Center (IBC) : Gensler
Okeechobee County Courthouse : Rowe Architects Incorporated

The top honor, the H. Dean Rowe, FAIA Award for Design Excellence is the highest honor presented for design excellence. The winning project was Verandah House by Halflants + Pichette Studio for Modern Architecture.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is the professional association for architects and those in the architecture field. AIA Tampa Bay is the regional chapter representing more than 600 architects and architectural intern members in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Hernando, Citrus, Sumter and Pasco Counties. The AIA provides programs and services including educational programs, design competitions, community service programs and serves as the united voice of the architecture profession. The regional chapter office is located in downtown Tampa at 200 N. Tampa Street, Ste. 100.
