2009 Annual Honor Awards & Dinner Gala !

Gala: October 3rd | USF Marshall Student Center

The Tampa Bay Chapter of the American Institute of Architects announced the recipients of their 2009 Honor Awards on Saturday, October 3rd at their Annual Dinner Gala held at the new Marshall Student Center at the University of South Florida in Tampa.  The Service Awards honor distinguished members, firms and laypeople for their contributions to the AIA, the community and the architecture profession. Gus Paras, AIA, the chapter president presented the awards. 

President’s Award: Kim Headland, AIA

President’s Award: Stephanie Ferrell, FAIA

Commemorative Award: Paulette Stribling, Hon. AIA

Artisan of the Year: Franklin Street Fine Woodwork and Craftsmanship

Contractor of the Year: The BECK Group

Award of Excellence: Del Acosta

Pullara Award: Vivian Salaga, AIA

Bob Levison Award: Deighton Babis, AIA

Firm of the Year: Wilder Architecture, Inc.

Medal of Honor: Pete Karamitsanis, AIA

Archifest 2009 Recap

This year's Archifest events went off without a hitch! Thanks to chair, Kim Headland, we were able to organize and host events such as:

- Architecture + Film "Playdate" at courtesy of Arkedezin in Ybor
- 40 Under 40 Gallery
- Modern Home Tour with Gene Leedy, FAIA thanks to the help of
Debbie Hepner
- Student Firm Crawl
- e-tba hosted a happy hour in at the new Z-Grille in St. Pete
- In conjunction with FMOPA, Photo Mojo! took place at Element in downtown Tampa
- Tampa Museum of Art Tours
- Design Salon with Architect Stanley Saitowitz, designer of the new TMA
- Horizon House Tour with original Architect, Mark Hampton, FAIA
- Registration Motivation Luncheon
- Annual Honor Awards Gala at the new Marshall Student Center
- Family Patio Party at the Columbia Cafe at the new History Center

40 Under 40 Exhibition Winners

40 Under 40 Gallery Opening @ Gallery AIA

Kicking off the Chapter’s Archifest celebrations, this Gallery AIA Event featured forty images of built and theoretical projects from those 40 years of age or under. This opening highlighted the most promising emerging architects, designers and planners who will impact the future of Tampa Bay’s built environment for years to come.


The jury chose five top notable entries including: two from Tim Hoeft, Assoc. AIA with Straughn Trout Architects, LLC.  Hoeft’s projects were the Way Station on the Cross Florida Greenway along with a Public Swimming Facility.  Graduate student, Timothy Keepers, AIAS received a top entry for his Mobility in Flux: Transit Hub project.  Graduate student Logan Mahaffey was chosen for his Tampa Museum of Contemporary Art idea.  Finally, Sergio DeSanto, RA of Wannemacher Jensen Architects rounded out the top five for his Crypsis: Shading Through Disruptive Camouflage design.

3rd Annual Amateur Architectural
Photography Competition

Sang Hwa Lee, 1st Place in International

This year their were two categories; a Tampa Bay as well as an International Category, which brought in photos taken all over the world.

There were approximately 80 entries that were juried by Tampa-based architectural photographers; George Cott, Steven Widoff, Randy Van Duinen and David Moore. 

The following eight projects were recognized:

Tampa Category
First place prize of $500, Jonathan Bykowski, Assoc. AIA
Second place prize of $250, Joe Harrington, Assoc. AIA
Third place prize of $125, Meyer Weitzman, AIA
Honorable mention was awarded to Ryan Minney, Assoc. AIA

International category
First place prize of $500, Sang Hwa Lee from New York City
Second place prize of $250, Benjamin Raposa, Assoc. AIA
Third place prize of $125, Sang Hwa Lee from New York City
Honorable Mention was awarded to Adam Barbosa
